Arrow Symbian Foundation OS release schedules published

Symbian Foundation blog published a released schedule for the Symbian Foundation OS. According to that, S60 5th edition with Feature Pack 1 or S60 5.1 will become Symbian^2. That probably makes the current S60 5th edition based on Symbian 9.4, found on Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, Symbian^1.

Symbian^3 and so on will follow after that. After the UIQ death and Nokia's will to unify the Symbian platform into one Open OS this move sounds very logical. Probably Nokia will replace S60 branding and stick with the simpler Symbian name.

Symbian^2 is most likely the Symbian Foundation OS, Sony Ericsson talked about in Mobile Wolrd Congress 09, the new OS which Sony Ericsson Idou will be based on.

Thanks to Steve from AllAboutSymbian for pointing out the above release schedule.

Symbian 3 is provided with source code available under the Eclipse Public License. Some say that the EPL does not offer the same level of transparency that GPL and LGPL, but the fact is that a significant extent, Symbian is now open source. In other words, now controlled Symbian Nokia shares one of the main advantages that have contributed to the Android platform Google - and to a lesser extent, other platforms such as Linux Palm WebOS grow rapidly in the smartphone market.
