BT Utilizes Motorola Video Encoding Capability within its IPTV Solution for BT Vision Sports

Motorola revealed that BT has utilized Motorola’s VODxchange encoding capability as part of its IPTV solution that helped deliver a successful launch of BT Vision Sport. With production and content processing technology delivered by BT’s Media and Broadcast division, BT Vision Sport provides a next-generation IPTV sports service to consumers across the UK.

“Delivering such a unique sports production across IPTV is a first in the UK,” said Ray Coppin, BT Media and Broadcast COO. “Motorola has provided us with the technology necessary to deploy a truly compelling on-demand sports service. The solution represents a critical element in our IPTV ecosystem and Motorola’s video industry experience has enabled a swift and robust deployment.”

Launched 11th August 2007, BT Vision Sports allows BT broadband subscribers to access on-demand coverage of the day’s premiership action. Available from 10pm on the day of the match, viewers can pause, fast forward and rewind near-live footage of full games.

BT Vision Sports’ deployment marks the first implementation of Motorola’s VODxchange solution in the UK. VODxchange was specifically designed to deliver best-in-class MPEG-4 encoding on demand, offering the best picture quality for the lowest bandwidth.

This technology is far better then this technology has been restricted by low broadband penetration and by the relatively high cost of installing wiring capable of transporting IPTV content reliably in the customer's home.
